What deep frying actually does to a picture
Deep frying is not one effect, it is a stack of four, and the order matters. Saturation goes first and goes far โ pushed to roughly two and a half times normal, skin turns orange, skies turn electric, and anything that was already a strong colour clips to a flat block. Contrast follows, crushing the shadows to black and blowing the highlights out, so the midtones that carried most of the picture's information simply disappear.
Then comes the sharpening, and this is the part people recognise without being able to name it. An unsharp mask exaggerates the difference across every edge, which produces a bright rim on one side and a dark rim on the other. On a face those halos trace the jaw and the nostrils; on text they turn every letter into a glowing outline. Grain is layered over the whole thing, which gives the compressor a mess of fine detail to choke on.
The last stage is the one most deep fry tools skip. The image is encoded to JPEG, decoded, and encoded again, six times over. Each round compresses the artefacts left by the previous round, so the blocks grow teeth and the colour bleeds sideways in a way a single heavy compression never produces. That generational damage is why a genuinely fried picture looks like it has been through fifty phones, and why one-pass imitations always look a bit too clean.

Where does the term deep fried come from?
It grew out of image boards in the mid-2010s, where a picture that had been saved, re-uploaded and screenshotted enough times acquired a burnt, oversaturated look. People started producing that look deliberately, and the cooking metaphor stuck because the result genuinely resembles something left in the fryer far too long.
Why does the tool compress the image several times?
Because a single hard compression produces clean, uniform blocking, and that is not what real degradation looks like. When you compress an image that already contains artefacts, the encoder treats those artefacts as detail worth preserving and builds new damage on top of them. Six rounds of that produces a texture no single pass can imitate.
How do I get it more fried than the maximum?
Download the result and put it straight back in. The second run starts from an image that is already destroyed, so the halos develop halos and the colour blocks fracture further. Two or three cycles takes you well past what one pass at maximum can reach.
Can I deep fry a GIF?
Not as an animation. Drop an animated GIF in and you get its first frame back as a still image. Frying every frame and reassembling them needs a GIF encoder that browsers do not provide, so for animated results you want ffmpeg with an eq and unsharp filter chain, or a dedicated GIF editor. Still frames pulled out of a GIF fry perfectly well here.
Can I add glowing eyes or emoji on top?
No โ this is a fryer, not a layering editor. Those overlays grew up alongside frying but they need something that can position and scale a second image. The usual workflow is to place the eyes or emoji in any editor first, export, then bring that file here so the overlays get cooked along with everything underneath. Doing it in that order is also what makes them look properly burnt rather than pasted on.
Can I export a deep fried PNG?
Yes. Open More options and switch the output format to PNG. It is lossless, so the file will be larger than the JPEG version, but every artefact the fryer produced is preserved exactly and a transparent background survives. WebP is there too and gives the smallest file of the three at the same visual result.
How is this different from a Photoshop deep fry action?
A Photoshop action stacks adjustment layers โ saturation, contrast, unsharp mask, noise โ and exports once. That gets you most of the look. What it cannot easily do is the generational part: encoding to JPEG, reopening the damaged file and encoding it again, six times over. This tool does that in the browser, which is why the block structure comes out layered rather than uniform.
What is the difference between deep frying and just lowering quality?
Lowering quality only removes โ it subtracts detail and leaves everything else where it was. Deep frying removes and adds: it strips detail through compression, but it also pushes colour, exaggerates every edge and layers grain on top. That is why a heavily reduced image looks soft and muddy while a fried one looks loud and aggressive.
